Cronistas, literatos e médicos deixaram diversos relatos sobre as enfermidades que afligiram homens, mulheres e mesmo cidades inteiras, revelando diferentes aspectos sobre a forma como as sociedades reagiam e imprimiam significados a esses eventos. Numa perspectiva mais recente, novos problemas- entre outros, a constituição de agendas de saúde pública, a emergência de novas moléstias, os quadros patológicos predominantes em determinadas épocas, as doenças de grupos específicos, a relação médico/paciente- e novas abordagens, especialmente as que vinculam a doença ao complexo universo da história da cultura e da sociedade, evidenciaram o quanto esse é um campo promissor, ampliando o nosso entendimento sobre o tema.
